K2: travelling to the 2nd highest mountain in the world
The mountain referred to as K2 is the 2nd highest mountain in the world. Many people travel to K2 to try and master the peak. K2 individual travel has become increasingly popular over recent years with many travel companies offering guided tours for groups and individuals.
The mountain of K2 is part of the Karakoram range of mountains situated in Southern Asia. The highest mountain on earth is Mount Everest at 29,021 feet high, while K2 is 28,051 feet at its highest peak. No person has even managed to master climbing K2 in the winter due to extreme weather conditons and treacherous ascents. It is often referred to as “”the savage mountain”" due to its difficulty to climb.
The side of K2 that faces China is much more intrepid to climb then the side that faces Pakistan. Most mountaineers chose the Pakistani side so they stand a better chance of success!
Mountaineers are recorded as first attempting to climb the peak since 1902. Today it remains a popular choice with climbers although many choose only to take a tour to the lower areas of the mountain.
K2 has the highest death rate for climbers of all mountain ranges. In 2008 there was a particularly horrific accident killing 11 people. Most climbers will only therefore only attempt the climb to the K2 base camp.
K2 individual travel is offered by a number of specialist travel companies. These travel companies provide guided tours to many mountain ranges in the area yet only a few experienced climbers will attempt to climb the higher peaks of K2. Even so climbers who are insistent on making the trip to this magnificent peak will be rewarded with breath-taking scenery and memories that will remain with them forever
